Khammam: The Congress government appears to be neglecting the construction of double bedroom houses already sanctioned during the previous BRS regime in erstwhile Khammam district.
Hundreds of constructed houses are yet to be handed over to the beneficiaries while the construction of a large number of houses is yet to be taken up in both Khammam and Kothagudem districts.
In Kothagudem district, the previous BRS government sanctioned 6168 double bedroom houses, of which construction of 2973 houses was completed and 2759 houses were handed over to the beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries for 184 houses selected, but houses are yet to be handed over to them while beneficiaries are to be selected for 94 houses, which indicates the State government’s negligence towards the double bedroom housing scheme. Construction of 2334 houses is pending and work tenders are yet to be called for construction of 861 houses in Kothagudem district.
In Khammam district, 7229 double bedroom houses have been sanctioned. According to district officials, the construction of 6107 double bedroom houses has been completed, 655 houses are in progress and the construction of 467 houses has not started.
The construction of 5630 houses was completed and distributed to the beneficiaries. As many as 1132 houses are pending to be handed over to the beneficiaries. Out of the 655 houses in various stages of construction in the district, 383 are independent houses.
Instead of completing construction of the independent houses, the officials are now planning to allot them to the beneficiaries and to ask them to build the houses on the model of Indiramma houses with government assistance.
It is alleged that at some places, the revenue officials are discarding the list of beneficiaries previously selected and preparing a new list of beneficiaries. It might be noted that some of the beneficiaries in Bhadrachalam town went to High Court last December when the local officials discarded a list of beneficiaries selected in June 2023.
A couple of days ago a Congress activist Saritha, to whom a double bedroom house was allotted, staged a protest over the delay in handing over the house to her, clearly indicating the government’s negligence.
