Nalgonda: Senior Congress leader and Nalgonda MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday said that the Congress would launch agitation to mount pressure on the State government for procuring paddy.

Speaking to media after visiting PACS paddy procurement centre in Mosambi market, Uttam Kumar Reddy said that paddy, which was brought to the paddy procurement centre by the farmers about 16 days ago, was still waiting for its turn for weighing and purchase.

“Majority of farmers in the State are cultivators of paddy crop. The State government failed to procure paddy from farmers. Though the Centre has issued notification on paddy procurement, the State government has remained insensitive resulting in the hardship to the farmers of the State,” he said. It is the responsibility of the State government to continue the procurement of paddy from the farmers by ensuring Minimum Support Price of Rs 1,960. He criticised the State government for asking the farmers not to take up cultivation of paddy for the yasangi crop season.

Reminding that crop insurance scheme was not being implemented in only Telangana in the country, he held the TRS government responsible for it and questioned as to whether Telangana State, which got approval of Rs 2 lakh crore budget by the Legislative House, was incapable of purchasing paddy from the farmers.
