Siddipet: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, officials in Siddipet district under the guidance of Finance Minister T Harish Rao have set up Siddipet District Autorickshaw Credit Co-operative Society (SDACCS) with 850 auto drivers as members of the Society.
The main objective of setting up the society is to keep the auto drivers away from the private money lenders trap. Marking the formal inauguration of the society here on Thursday, the Minister said that the auto drivers, who met him in 2019, had narrated the hardships they were facing since they were forced to borrow the amounts. Moved by the plight of the auto drivers, Rao said that he had immediately decided to form such an organisation with an objective to support the auto drivers. The Minister said that he has mortgaged his own house to mobilise Rs 45 lakh to begin the society. However, he has said that the Covid-19 has delayed his efforts a bit.
During a progamme in Siddipet on Thursday, Harish Rao distributed loans and uniforms to all the members of the Cooperative Society.
Suggesting the farmers to lead a disciplined life, the Minister said that auto drivers will get better income since the town is being developed into an industrial and tourist hub.
Asking them regularly wear the uniforms, he educated them on the need of talking to the customers politely, deserting the habits of drinking and chewing tobacco products.
Amid the applause of the auto drivers, Rao said that his childhood friend and NRI Purnachander has donated Rs 6 lakh to help him to distribute uniforms to all the auto drivers in Siddipet after knowing about his efforts to reform and support the auto drivers. To bring a change in their families, Rao suggested them to spend productive time with family and children to guide them into a better future. Saying that they were distributing 2 uniforms, and Rs 4 lakh free insurance policy, Rao said that the family of auto drivers will be given Rs 5,000 if they perform any function at their home. Underlining the importance of providing the best education to their children, the Minister said that they would guide them to admit them to the best schools. Saying that they have given double bedroom houses to 45 families, Rao said that they will identify the homeless auto drivers to build double bedroom houses for such families.
The Minister assured them to get more such benefits if they successfully run the Co-operative society besides bringing a visible change in their behaviour which will eventually improve the image of the Siddipet town. He has assured to get more funds to the cooperative society
