Hyderabad: A massive crackdown was launched by the Hyderabad City Police and the Prohibition and Excise Department at Dhoolpet on Wednesday night, with over 100 persons who had come to Dhoolpet and vicinities to buy marijuana being arrested.
Around 150 personnel from both departments were part of the special drive, which will continue for the next few days, DCP (West) AR Srinivas said, adding that the police had identified those procuring marijuana from other States, those transporting it here and also retail sellers.
“This apart, those coming here to purchase marijuana are also being rounded up,” he said, adding that 80 persons involved in bulk procurement, transportation and retail sale of marijuana were identified and most of them were arrested.
“A few of these people were arrested earlier in similar cases and the PD Act was also invoked against them. They were still continuing with the illegal activities. We will again invoke the PD Act and send them to jail,” he said.
The police found that some IT professionals and students were also visiting Dhoolpet area to purchase marijuana. “Cases under the NDPS Act will be registered against those visiting Dhoolpet to buy marijuana. That will mean no passport and difficulties in getting jobs,” the DCP said.
Excise and Prohibition Superintendent (Dhoolpet) Naveen Kumar said those caught would be called for counselling for one month.
“They will be sent to a psychologist for counselling. We will also be in touch with their parents during the period to know about changes in their behaviour. Our intention is to keep youngsters away from bad habits,” he said.
