Karimnagar: Ellanthakunta police on Tuesday performed final rites of a person who died of Covid-19 on humanitarian grounds. All sections of society, including DGP M Mahender Reddy, appreciated the move.
According to police, the deceased Yamsani Sampath (38), a native of Sirsedu in Ellanthakunta mandal, and his family members including mother, brother and sister were infected by the virus.
Unable to spend money on treatment in private hospitals, the family members opted for home isolation. On Tuesday morning, Sampath went to the village tank to relieve himself. As he did not return home even after a few hours, his brother went to the tank and was shocked to see Sampath dead.
Though he requested the villagers to help him to perform his brother’s funeral, none came forward. Learning about the incident, SI Praveenraj visited the spot and performed final rites. The SI with the help of trainee SI Rajinikanth shifted the body to government hospital in an autorickshaw trolley.
He then took the body to the graveyard and performed final rites by following Covid protocol. Later, the SI interacted with villagers and convinced them to extend support to the deceased’s family.
Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy responded to the incident through his Twitter account and appreciated SI Praveenraj for the noble cause.
