Warangal: Much to the joy of cotton farmers, the maximum price of cotton per quintal touched the Rs 8,800 mark on Wednesday at the Enumamula agriculture market yard in Warangal. This is said to be the highest ever price for cotton recorded at the Enumamula market.
Chirra Ganesh, a cotton farmer from Madipally village in Hasanparthy Mandal, sold his cotton produce of 16 bags to one Mahalaxmi Traders in the market for Rs 8,800 per quintal. “I am very happy to get this price. But the yield in two acres was not high this year,” he added.
Farmers till Wednesday brought in five lakh bags of cotton to Asia’s largest market. “Due to the heavy rains that lashed the State last month, cotton yield came down drastically. This is one of the reasons for the record price,” a market official said. Traders said there was high demand for cotton in the international market too. Meanwhile, the officials said that the market would be closed for three days from December 31 and will function from January 3.
