Adilabad: Adilabad Collector Sikta Patnaik said cotton procurement from farmers will begin from October 20. She convened a meeting with growers, farmer leaders, traders, officials of Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) officials here on Tuesday. She was joined by MLAs Jogu Ramanna and Bapu Rao.
Sikta stated the minimum support price fixed by the government is less than that of the market. She said that steps were being taken for smooth procurement of the cotton produce. She informed that the crop was raised in 3.90 lakh acres across Adilabad and yield was expected to be 27 lakh quintals this season.
The IAS officer instructed officials concerned to make necessary arrangements for carrying out purchasing and to avoid inconvenience to farmers. She asked the authorities of the CCI to offer the MSP to the growers and requested traders to buy the produce from the farmers. She stated that the cotton was sold for around Rs 7,500 per quintal in the market.
Jogu Ramanna urged the authorities to offer the best price for the cotton produce. Farmer leaders requested them to follow recommendations of the Swaminathan commission while purchasing the cotton. They sought the officials to create awareness among tribal farmers who were likely to be exploited by middlemen.
Zilla Parishad Chairperson Rathod Janardhan, Additional collector M Nataraj, Farmer Coordination Committee president A Bhoja Reddy, CCI Manager Maheshwar Reddy, District Agriculture Officer Asha Kumari, District Transport Officer P Srinivas and many other officials were present.
