Nirmal: A couple was unanimously elected as chairperson and vice-chairperson of Nirmal Municipality for the first time in the history of the civic body, which was reserved for general women. A special meeting was held to elect the two posts here on Monday.
Forty-year-old Appala Kavya was chosen as the head of the civic body, while her husband Ganesh Chakravarthy was elected her deputy.
While Kavya won from ward number 36 by a margin of 600 votes against her opponent M Srilatha of the BJP, Ganesh registered victory from the 37th ward of the 42-member Nirmal municipality. They became the first couple to be the chairperson and the vice-chairperson of the civic body respectively.
A homemaker and a mother of two children, Kavya is an M Sc (Botany) graduate from Kakatiya University. An advocate by profession, Ganesh entered into politics and was elected as the chairperson of Nirmal municipality by contesting on the ticket of BSP in 2014. His paternal aunty Anuradha was chairperson 2009 to 2014. His grandfather Narsaiah had served as the chairperson from 1981 to 83.
The Congress stood at the top place by securing 25 wards, while the BJP stood in the second spot with 14 wards.
