An Maharashtra couple was arrested in Adilabad for allegedly extorting Rs 81,600 from a family by claiming they could perform black magic. Police said the couple later demanded another Rs 1.32 lakh, citing a threat to a family member’s life
Adilabad: A couple from Maharashtra was arrested on charges of extortion and threatening a family in the name of performing black magic in Adilabad on Tuesday.
Adilabad DSP L Jeevan Reddy said Syed Saleem and Shama of Sangli district were apprehended for allegedly extorting Rs 81,600 from a family from Mavala under the pretext of purchasing puja material required to perform black magic.
The couple allegedly demanded a further Rs 1.32 lakh from the family, claiming that one of its members faced a threat to life.
Police advised the public not to fall prey to such false claims or blindly believe in superstitious practices.
