Peddapalli: A young couple was washed away in the Godavari river on the outskirts of Godavarikhani town on Sunday. While the woman drowned, the man was rescued by a fisherman.
Police said Daraveni Raviteja, a resident of Vittalnagar in Godavarikhani, and Mounika from Peddabonkur had become friends through Instagram two years ago. Their friendship turned into love, and the couple had planned to marry on November 1. Mounika had arrived at Raviteja’s house a fortnight ago.
As per their family tradition, Raviteja’s family and Mounika went to the Godavari to take a holy dip. While the couple was bathing, Mounika reportedly slipped into the deep waters and was swept away by the current.
In an attempt to save her, Raviteja also got pulled into the river. A fisherman, Nagula Ramulu, who noticed the incident, rushed to their rescue and managed to save Raviteja. However, by the time Mounika was pulled out, she had drowned.
Police visited the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.
