Hyderabad: A study published in Nature Medicine in the United States indicated that the risk of heart disease remains high even a year after getting infected with Covid-19.
According to the report, even a mild infection can enhance a person’s risk of cardiovascular problems. The risk is said to be elevated even in people under 65 years of age that did not have conditions such as diabetes or obesity.
Over the course of a year, Al-Aly’s team examined more than 1.5 lakh veterans with heart problems, who survived for at least 30 days after contracting Covid-19. Cardiovascular outcomes were compared to 5.6 million people without the infection and another 5.9 million patients whose data was gathered before the pandemic began.
After a 12-month study, Covid has been found to raise the risk of heart failure by 72 per cent and cardiac strokes by 52 per cent. However, Covid-19 patients in this study were infected before vaccines were available, so it is unclear if the shots might alter the results.
While the role of Covid in causing other various diseases is being understood and documented, research into the effects of post-Covid syndrome is still in its early stages. Nonetheless, the warning symptoms are already present.
According to experts, healthcare providers across the world must be prepared to deal with the increase in cardiovascular diseases.
