Hyderabad: A 36-year-old Covid positive woman has made a recovery after being put on ECMO support for 41-days at Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City. The woman was given Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support when her oxygen levels did not improve despite being on ventilator.
Due to her medical condition, the patient faced several health complications. Multiple attempts to wean her off ECMO failed and over a period of time, her kidneys also got affected requiring dialysis support, hospital doctors in a press release said.
But gradually, the ECMO support was decreased and finally, after 41 days she was taken off it and put on ventilator support. Subsequently, she was connected to high flow oxygen and taken off the ventilator and her kidneys also started to recover. Later, the tracheostomy tube was also removed and patient was able to speak and eat on her own.
Dr. Ganshyam M Jagathkar, Director, Critical Care said, “considering the condition in which the patient arrived and the long duration of ECMO support, it is really amazing to see her recover. The multidisciplinary team of intensivists, surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, and nutritionists made it happen”.
