Hyderabad: Doctors at Continental Hospital have enabled a 21-year-old woman, who was admitted with Covid symptoms, including shortness of breath and needed ventilator support, to deliver a baby through caesarean section.

Thrupathamma was 37 weeks pregnant and lost consciousness within a few minutes of reaching the healthcare facility. With no time left to wait for Covid-19 test results, the doctors decided to take up an emergency surgery so that the lives of the mother and baby could be saved.

“As the patient was not able to maintain saturation and had to be incubated, we decided to immediately go for a C-section despite the patient being on ventilator support. Since there was an immediate requirement of blood transfusion, the in-house blood bank did the needful,” Dr Jyothi Kanakala, senior obstetrician and gynaecologist, Continental Hospitals, said.

Post delivery, the infant did not cry, and was shifted to Neonatal-ICU where paediatricians treated the newborn and saved its life. Following the surgery, the mother and baby were put in ICU care and at the time of discharge, both tested Covid-19 negative, added Dr Jyothi.
