A hackers group by the name “Dark Leak Market” claims that it has database of 150 million people who have registered on the CoWin portal
Hyderabad: Registering self on India’s vaccine-registration portal CoWin is mandatory for people in the country for taking the Covid-19 vaccine. The website seeks information of individuals which includes a person’s name, mobile number, Aadhar ID and GPS for registration. With this, it is understood that the website has already acquired a database of millions of users through the process.
The question here is, “is our data safe?”
In a rather worrisome post, a hackers group by the name “Dark Leak Market” made a post on the Dark Web saying that it has the database of all those who have registered themselves on the CoWin portal. DarkTracer, a criminal intelligence profiling platform, shared a screenshot of Dark Leak Market’s post in which it is offering to sell the database it has acquired from undisclosed sources. Dark Leak Market is claiming to “resell” the database for $ 800, stating that they are not the “original leakers” of the data.
DarkTracer, in their tweet mentioned that information of about 150 million vaccinated people in India is at stake. If the claims are to be believed, all our date is already out in the market prices at $ 800. That being said, questions over safety are now being raised with the biggest being “if the government has compromised the safety of millions of people’s data base in the process of registration.”
