Hyderabad: The year 2021, saw 85 persons being murdered in different instances across Hyderabad and a couple of hundred suspects arrested for their involvement in the killing. The previous year, 64 persons were murdered while in 2019 the number was 84.

While the murders are recorded as a grave crime in the police records, higher officials attribute extra-marital affairs involving close persons including friends, colleagues, or family members as a reason behind most killings these days. “In foreign countries, violent crimes arising out of extra-marital affairs or love affairs are termed as ”crime of passion”,” said a senior police official.

In almost 60 per cent of the murder cases, the police have noticed the main reason for the homicide to be an extra-marital affair. In many cases, it was a love triangle and disputes arising out of it. In some cases, the husband was found to have killed the romantic interloper upon coming to know about his wife’s illicit relationship or killed the wife suspecting her to be in an illicit relationship with some other person.

“Murders relating to gang wars or organised crimes are now a thing of past. What we are probing these days are murders resulting out of extra-marital affairs, property disputes, or family disputes,” said an official of Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force.

Where sexual jealousy was involved, the murders were found to be brutal and more violent compared to others. “It is because such murders are planned for months some times and the anger or jealousy levels are high and the killers unwavering. One can notice it by taking a look at the injuries inflicted on the victims,” the official explained.

This year, a sensational killing of a man at Jubilee Hills made headlines in April. According to police, the victim, a tailor aged 38 years, from Karmikanagar, was killed by his wife and her friend. After killing him, they had kept the body in a refrigerator waiting to shift it to some other place during the night. The two suspects – the victim”s wife and her friend – were arrested by the police after the neighbours alerted the cops.
