Khammam: A truck driver has broken his limbs in a suicide attempt following alleged custodial torture at VM Banjar police station in the district.

According to family members of the driver, K Jeevan Kumar Ananthagiri of Kodad mandal in Suryapet district, he was caught in a drunken driving test during late night hours on Saturday while he was going to Khammam from Sathupalli with a load of cement. He was taken to VM Banjar police station where he was beaten indiscriminately by constables.

He was said to have ran to the first floor of the police station to escape from police torture and he was again beaten by police allegedly making casteist remarks. Unable to bear the beating he jumped off the building.

Then the police took him to the government hospital in Khammam and left him there after informing his family members. The vertebrae and hip bone were broken due to the impact of jumping from the police station building and his condition was said to be serious.

The family members speaking to the media complained that police have taken Jeevan Kumar to police station and beat him even though he was not drunk when he was tested with breathalyser.
