Hyderabad: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has convened a crucial meeting scheduled for April 21 in New Delhi to address water yield concerns surrounding the Godavari river allocations. The agenda focuses on resolving objections raised by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regarding water allocations for projects initiated and proposed by the respective States.

The discussion stems from the CWC’s water availability assessment study of the Godavari River, submitted in May 2023. Following the submission, the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) was asked to respond while Andhra Pradesh has expressed some objections to the findings.

According to the CWC’s projections, water allocation for the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh was pegged at 1,435 TMC, slightly below the State’s claim of 1,486 TMC. With the yields from the regeneration sources considered, the availability would extend to approximately 1,500 TMC.

For the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh, the study estimated a net availability of 498 TMC, marginally exceeding the project’s requirement of 484 TMC. CWC chairman Mukesh Sinha, who served as the Godavari River Management Board Chairman till recently, has taken initiative in organising the meeting to iron out the irritants in water sharing that added to the conflict situation.
