Hyderabad: As many as 145 persons travelling on two-wheelers lost their lives in fatal road crashes in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate so far this year, with 34 of them being pillion riders.

According to data on road crashes reported from January till May 31, 145 persons died in accidents involving scooters and motorcycles, with 119 persons among them not wearing a helmet. None of the 34 pillion riders were wearing a helmet.

Among the victims, 26 had worn helmets, but unfortunately died on the spot or succumbed to injuries in hospital. According to the police, all of them died either due to not wearing the headgear properly or because they wore a substandard or duplicate helmet. Thus they sustained grievous head injuries in the crashes, resulting in death.

Expressing concern over two-wheeler riders not adhering to the helmet rule even after repeated warnings, senior police officials said at least 50 per cent of the fatalities in accidents during recent times were of two-wheeler riders, and most of them were found to be not wearing helmets. While some had helmets hung on to their vehicles, others had worn plastic caps, construction head guards and so on.

“We can say more than half of the fatal road mishaps being reported in the commissionerate have two-wheeler riders and pillion riders as victims. In most cases, they were not wearing helmets,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic), Cyberabad.

The Cyberabad traffic police is urging citizens to compulsorily wear a good quality helmet while riding or sitting pillion on a two-wheeler. “People have to change their behaviour and keep away from ignorance, for a better and safer way of commuting,” the DCP said.
