Hyderabad: Actor Sonu Sood has been the man of the season right from when he began extending a helping hand to those hit by the pandemic, and now, it appears even crooks are out to make some money using his name.

A man from Bihar, who posed as an advisor to the actor and cheated people from the city in the name of a non-existent Sonu Sood Corporation, was arrested by the Cyberabad Cybercrime police here on Saturday. The suspect was identified as Ashish Kumar Singh (23), a private employee from Panchawati Colony in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar.

Police said Ashish Kumar posted his phone number on Twitter claiming to provide help from Sonu Sood Corporation. When those in need contacted him, he made false promises and sent them fake ID cards to convince them. He then tricked them into sending him money in the guise of registration and processing fees for receiving bigger sums as help.

“The complainant had contacted the suspect over the phone number given by him on Twitter and the latter introduced himself as Pankaj Singh Bhadauria from Sonu Sood Corporation and offered help. The victim was tricked into sending Rs 60,000 into bank accounts provided by him,” an official said, adding that there could be many victims of the fraud.

The incident had come to light in early March with the Cyberabad Police registering a case and also issuing a cautionary note asking people to be wary of such frauds. The investigators tracked Ashish Kumar to Muzaffarpur, from where he was finally arrested on Saturday.

Police have asked those cheated in the name of Sonu Sood Corporation to contact the Cybercrime Police, Cyberabad on 94906 17310 or 040-27854031, or via email sho-cybercrimes@tspolice.gov.in for legal action.
