Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Saturday arrested eight cyber fraudsters from Rajasthan, who allegedly duped people on the pretext of selling vehicles and furniture at throwaway prices through online advertisements on e-commerce portals and social media. The police seized 15 mobile phones and 14 SIM cards from their possession.
The arrested were involved in several cybercrime cases including frauds registered in Cyberabad and other police jurisdictions in the State. “To convince the buyer, they said they were army or paramilitary personnel and shared identity cards to gain the trust of the victim,” said K Balakrishna Reddy, ACP Cybercrimes (Cyberabad).
The gang would then trick the victim into transferring money in the name of advance, gate pass charges and delivery charges. “They also sent fake transport receipts and collected money saying the product was on the way. Later, they switched off their phones,” he said, adding that some of the gang members were involved in sextortion cases as well. They collected contact numbers of persons on Facebook and chatted with them through WhatsApp.
“Later, they would make phone calls with the help of some women and ask the person on the other end to send nude videos or do WhatsApp video calls. They used the videos to blackmail and collect money from victims,” he said, asking the public not to believe in any advertisements posted on social media that advertised goods at prices lower than the market price.
