Cyberabad cops tackling drug menace with iron fist
Cyberabad cops booked 222 cases, arrest 460 persons for peddling in last one year
Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Police has stepped up checking on drug-related cases and the crackdown has started to yield noteworthy results. In the last one year, the police here have booked over 222 cases and arrested over 460 persons on charges of drug peddling.
Apart from this, 23 persons were detained under the Preventive Detention Act between January 2021 and January 2022.
Officials said that the Special Operations Team (SOT) and NDPS Cell officials are constantly on the lookout for drug peddlers and consumers, and have developed a strong informant network to help curb the drug menace.
According to the officials, 2,863.09 kgs of marijuana, 128 live marijuana plants, 14 marijuana pills, 8.63 litres of hashish oil, 141 kgs of Alprazolam, 240.29 grams MDMA, 47 numbers of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) blots, 200 grams of Opium, 61 Ecstasy pills and other drugs were seized from January 2021 up to January 2022.
Following instructions from Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra, the police across all zones have stepped up checking at hotspots on a daily basis. Officials said inter-State drug peddlers, bulk buyers, local retailers and drug transporters have been put on the police radar in order to curb marijuana peddling and its consumption in the commissionerate.
Apart from this, officials have seized several lakhs of rupees in cash and vehicles used in transporting the psychotropic drug substances and the suspects along with the seized material were handed over to the police stations concerned and remanded in judicial remand.
Informants’ network
“For prevention of illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, the SOT along with the NDPS Cell is actively conducting raids, laying traps and subsequently busting the contraband drug rackets,” M Stephen Raveendra said. The police teams are building strong sources and informants’ network to curb the menace and as a result, any drug movement or deal is tipped off and appropriate action is being initiated against the drug peddlers and racketeers, he said.
The police, on the other hand, are also ensuring that those arrested in drug-related cases are convicted in the court of law. “So far, this year, Preventive Detention Act was invoked against 25 drug peddlers to stop them from involving in such illegal activities in the future,” the Commissioner said.
The Cyberabad Police has requested citizens to inform them about drug suppliers on Dial 100 or through the Cyberabad WhatsApp number – 9490617444. Their identity will be kept confidential, officials assured.
