Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police Commissioner M.Stephen Raveendra on Thursday inaugurated the Anti-Drug Abuse Committees formed in schools and colleges of Madhapur Zone. Members of committees from 148 educational institutions were present.
Speaking at the event, Stephen Raveendra said the initiative aimed to reach out to the public and spread awareness on the ill effects of drugs. The approach was ‘awareness’ and ‘strict enforcement’.
The anti-drug abuse committees were formed to eradicate the drug menace on campuses and will be chaired by the principal along with members drawn from the faculty, non-teaching staff, parents and students apart from a police officer and a mental health expert.
“The committees will encourage peer policing among students on drug usage and on establishing a network and channel so that all instances of drug abuse are brought to its notice. The committees will also organize training and motivation classes to volunteer students as peer counselors,” Raveendra said.
Madhapur DCP Shilpavalli also spoke. A helpline – 9492099100 – was also launched for citizens to share drug related information.
