Hyderabad: The jewellery heist at Hill Ridge Villas in Gachibowli could have been foiled had the security guards of the gated community alerted the police and handed over one of the suspects caught by a local resident.
Cyberabad Commissioner of Police M Ramesh said that on June 6, when the arrested trio, Kamal Shahi, Vimla Shahi and Kalpani Shahi, were collecting valuables from the house of a businessman living in the gated community, Suresh Shahi, suspected to be the kingpin of the gang, was moving suspiciously outside the house.
“One of the neighbours caught hold of Suresh and handed him over to the security guards of the colony. After detaining him for some time, they allowed him to leave without alerting the police. Had he been handed over to the police, the gang would have been caught then itself,” said Cyberabad Commissioner M Ramesh.
The Cyberabad police arrested three Nepali nationals who had made away with gold and diamond-studded jewellery valued at Rs. 10 crore nearly a week ago from a businessman’s house in Gachibowli. The stolen property was recovered intact from them.
The arrested persons were identified as Kamal Shahi (32), Vimla Shahi (30) and Kalpani Shahi (26), all natives of Nepal.
According to the police, Suresh Shahi, who is believed to be the gang leader, planned and encouraged the three suspects to steal valuables from the businessman’s house and facilitated their escape. “Suresh arranged jobs for Kamal and Vimla in the house with the help of Karan Bishwa Karma, a local vendor known to the businessman’s family,” said the Commissioner.
Following the heist, the police formed special teams and, in coordination with the police of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, caught the trio on Bilaspur Road in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
The police recovered 7.837 kilograms of gold, 1.361 kilograms of silver, Rs. 33,170 in cash and two mobile phones.
