Karimnagar: The pathbreaking Telangana Dalit Bandhu aimed at economic empowerment of the Dalit community has made a great start in Huzurabad Assembly constituency with the Rs 10 lakh assistance amount under the scheme already parked in the bank accounts of at least 13,000 of the 24,000-plus beneficiaries identified in the constituency.
The depositing of the money in the beneficiaries’ bank accounts gathered momentum with the completion of the survey of eligible families in the constituency.
Speaking to Telangana Today, District Collector RV Karnan said the number of beneficiairy families that had already received the money in their bank accounts had touched 13,000.
With the State government selecting Huzurabad Assembly constituency to implement Telangana Dalit Bandhu scheme on a pilot basis, the district administration carried out the beneficiaries’ survey from August 27 to September 3.
Besides family details, the survey also sought to know from the beneficiaries the area of business they were planning the invest the money.
Though the banks also participated in the survey to gather details of beneficiaries and open new bank accounts in the names of beneficiairies for Telangana Dalit Bandhu, some banks took a little more time to complete the process. As a result, the district administration could not deposit the Rs 10 lakh into the accounts of all the beneficiaries totalling 24,269 Dalit families identified in the survey.
Of the Rs 2,200 crore released by the State government to implement the scheme in Huzurabad, only Rs 1,300 crore was deposited in the accounts of beneficiaries. “The delay was on account of the time taken to open bank accounts,” a district official said.
The district administation, however, is facing a problem of sorts in finalising the kind of businesses the beneficiaries should invest their money since most of the selected field of business activity by the Dalits was the same. For instance, 3,500 beneficiaries want to invest the money in purchasing cars while 3,200 dalits are keen on getting tractors. The officials will speak with all the beneficiaries only after having thorough discussions with the beneficiaries.
When asked about this issue, Karnan said the businesses would be finalised by after speaking with the beneficiaries and at the same time, ensuring that they derive good benefits from the investment.
