Danam Nagender seeks SC stay on Telangana HC disqualification order

Khairtabad MLA Danam Nagender has reportedly approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Telangana High Court order disqualifying him from the Assembly. The High Court had declared his disqualification effective from April 23, 2024

Hyderabad: Khairtabad MLA Danam Nagender on Saturday reportedly filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the Telangana High Court judgment delivered on Friday disqualifying him from the Assembly. He urged the apex court to grant him time to appeal against the High Court judgment. He also sought a stay on the High Court order declaring the Khairtabad Assembly constituency vacant, according to reports.

However, BRS MLA from Huzurabad Padi Kaushik Reddy and BJP Floor Leader Aleti Maheswar Reddy are learnt to have already filed caveat petitions in connection with the Khairtabad MLA case. They had earlier approached the High Court over Danam Nagender filing his nomination as the Congress candidate from Secunderabad in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while continuing as the BRS MLA from Khairtabad.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court declared that his disqualification would take effect from April 23, 2024. It directed that copies of the order be sent to the Election Commission of India and the Telangana Speaker’s office.

Interestingly, after the High Court judgment on Friday, Danam Nagender had said he had not considered approaching the Supreme Court. The MLA had also categorically said he welcomed the High Court judgment. The High Court had rejected an appeal by Danam Nagender’s counsel seeking time to approach the apex court against the judgment.
