Hyderabad: A dancer from the city was allegedly cheated by cyber fraudsters of over Rs 11 lakh on a matrimonial site.
According to the police, the dancer had posted her details on the site seeking a suitable alliance. Recently, she received a call from a man expressing interest and claiming to be a Non-Resident Indian from the United Kingdom, working as a supervisor for a leading car manufacturing company.
Eventually, both started chatting on WhatsApp and on phone calls and became close and decided to get married. A few days ago, the man told the dancer that he would like to send some valuable gifts to her and to convinced her by sharing pictures of jewelry and costly gadgets.
Two days later, she received a call from another person claiming to be a Customs official from the Delhi airport, claiming that they had received a costly parcel in her name and to receive it, she would have to pay customs charges, tax and other expenses. Believing them, in various installments, she paid Rs 11.7 lakh to fraudsters and ended up being cheated.
A complaint was lodged with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police, who have booked a case and are investigating.
