Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan has challenged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to conduct student union elections in universities before advocating a reduction in the minimum age for contesting legislative elections.

Responding to the Chief Minister’s remarks on allowing 21-year-olds to enter legislatures, Sravan said the government should first restore democratic processes on university campuses. He questioned why student union elections, which fall within the State government’s jurisdiction, had not been conducted.

“Before speaking about 21-year-old legislators, hold student union elections. Leadership begins on college campuses,” he said.

The BRS MLC argued that while changing the eligibility age for Parliament or State Assemblies may require amendments by the Centre, conducting elections in State universities was entirely within the State government’s powers. He urged the Chief Minister to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate his commitment through action.

“If the government genuinely wanted to empower youth, it should first allow students to learn and practise democracy through elected student unions,” he said.
