Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan said the Congress government in Telangana was using Section 22A of the Registration Act not as an urban land ceiling mechanism, but as a tool for looting urban property owners. He stated that private plots and patta lands, including properties registered decades ago, were being abruptly added to the 22A prohibited list, creating panic among ordinary property owners who wanted to sell their properties for family and medical expenses.
In a statement, Sravan alleged that affected people were being made to run between MRO offices, Collectors’ offices and registration offices, with officials citing jurisdictional issues and pending reports or locked portals. He said even those with valid documents were being subjected to harassment through delays and alleged demands for bribes. He also said the toll-free number 1800 599 4788 was not functioning.
He raised concerns that the resulting distress was being exploited by real estate middlemen and alleged ruling-party benamis, who were buying properties at throwaway prices by promising to manage officials. He alleged that such properties were subsequently removed from the 22A list.
The BRS MLC stated that any blanket relaxation of 22A restrictions could be misused to clear lands belonging to water bodies, Wakf, endowments, government and other public categories along with genuine private properties. He alleged that details of Hyderabad district lands had been removed from the Bhu Bharati website and called for people to collectively question the Congress regime, which has become a real estate vulture.
