Hyderabad: Alleging that the proposed municipal poll schedule in Telangana amounts to a procedural ambush, BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan demanded immediate intervention by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to ensure free and fair elections. He urged the State Election Commission to review and revise the schedule. He appealed to the Governor to step in to safeguard constitutional norms and the integrity of the electoral process.

In his open letter on Wednesday, Sravan criticised the State Election Commission for announcing an extraordinarily compressed schedule, leaving just one day for voter roll verification, two days for nominations and barely a week for campaigning. He argued that such hastiness would affect democratic participation and disproportionately benefit the ruling party with its established networks.

He also faulted the Commission for ignoring the Sammakka-Sarakka Jathara at Medaram, calling it an affront to public sentiment in a State where lakhs participate in the festival. He said there was no constitutional emergency to justify the rush and warned that the truncated timeline would hurt opposition parties, independents, women and first-time candidates.
