Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan has urged the Legislative Council Privileges Committee to take strict action against officials for alleged negligence, protocol violations and failure to respond to elected representatives. He urged the Privileges Committee to establish strong precedents to make officials accountable to the legislature, pointing out that constitutional institutions and democratic processes must be respected irrespective of changes in government.

Speaking at a committee meeting on Thursday, Sravan said officials need not offer ceremonial respect to MLCs but must respond to their letters and questions concerning public issues. “If an elected representative receives no response, how can ordinary citizens expect accountability from senior officials,” he asked.

He called for an operational document explaining the rights, duties and legal protections of MLCs to be circulated among members. He also urged the Council Secretariat to issue clear directions to officials to function within the constitutional framework.

The BRS MLC questioned the step-motherly treatment of MLCs, alleging discrimination between MLAs and MLCs. He demanded restoration of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations to MLCs, saying the absence of such funds affected their ability to address public needs. He also sought detailed discussion in the Council on important Bills and reports introduced in the Assembly.

Sravan alleged serious protocol violations involving the Council Chairman and the Deputy Chairman during their visits to districts. He also objected to local MLCs being excluded from official meetings, with even their RTI applications being ignored.

He also raised the conduct of some police personnel at Nampally court, alleging that they acted without due regard even after he identified himself as an MLC and a practising Supreme Court and High Court advocate.
