Hyderabad: Struggling with debts incurred for their daughter’s marriage, a couple resorted to chain-snatching in Chikkadpally to reportedly overcome their financial crisis and ended up behind bars.

The Chikkadpally Police cracked the case within days of the incident, arresting the couple and recovering the stolen property on Saturday.

The accused couple was identified as Gudipati Bramaiah (51) and his wife Gudipati Anjali alias Anjani (48), residents of Borabanda and natives of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh.

On October 31, an elderly woman was attacked near the lift of her apartment in Chikkadpally while returning from shopping and her chain was snatched, causing abrasions to her neck.

Based on her complaint, the Chikkadpally police booked a case and nabbed Bramaiah in Ashok Nagar.

During interrogation, he confessed that due to business loss and debts incurred for his younger daughter’s marriage, he decided to commit robbery. He reportedly learned chain-snatching techniques by watching YouTube videos and had been scouting elderly women in areas like Yousufguda and Borabanda for several days before committing the crime.

After the robbery, Bramaiah handed the stolen chain to his wife Anjali, who mortgaged it at a finance firm in Kukatpally branch and borrowed Rs 1.1 lakh, which the couple used to clear part of their debts.
