Deficit rains, AC use push up power consumption and bills

Deficient rainfall and continued use of air-conditioners amid humid conditions are pushing up domestic power consumption and electricity bills in Telangana. The State recorded a record peak demand of 19,543 MW on September 9, despite the ongoing monsoon season

Hyderabad: Like farmers, domestic consumers are also slowly feeling the impact of El Niño, with power consumption steadily increasing and monthly electricity bills rising. Despite the monsoon, consumers are expressing concern over deficient rainfall and the extensive use of air-conditioners this season.

Generally, domestic power consumption declines in September with the advent of the monsoon. However, inadequate rainfall this season has forced people to continue using air-conditioners to beat humid conditions. Domestic consumers said their monthly electricity bills had increased compared to the previous monsoon, with many reporting a rise of at least Rs 300 to Rs 400 compared to last year.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, the highest maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius was recorded at Nidamanoor in Nalgonda district on Tuesday. It was followed by 38.3 degrees Celsius at Vangoor in Nagarkurnool and 38.1 degrees Celsius at Penuballi in Khammam.

The State recorded an average maximum temperature of 32.1 degrees Celsius. The prevailing conditions were also reflected in power demand, with the State registering its highest-ever peak demand of 19,543 MW on September 9.

The demand is not only the highest recorded in Telangana but also in the history of united Andhra Pradesh. Usually, peak power demand rises during summer. However, the record demand during the monsoon season has raised concerns in the Energy Department. On average, the State consumes 310 million units of power every day.

Meanwhile, water levels in major irrigation projects, including Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar, are fast depleting.

Though recent rains have provided some respite from the sweltering conditions, domestic consumers remain wary of the situation.
