Karimnagar: Upset over being denied a house under the Indiramma housing scheme, a youth, Vanthadupula Srinivas, attempted suicide by consuming petrol at Sundaragiri village in Chigurumamidi mandal on Tuesday.
Srinivas, accompanied by his wife, staged a protest on the Karimnagar–Husnabad road holding a bottle of petrol, demanding immediate sanction of a house. He urged Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and members of the Indiramma committee to come to the spot and address his grievance. With no response forthcoming, Srinivas consumed petrol in a suicide bid.
Alert locals intervened and informed the police, who rushed to the spot and shifted him to the government hospital in Husnabad for treatment.
Earlier, Srinivas stated that he was eligible for a house under the scheme but was not included in the first list of beneficiaries. When he raised the issue, committee members reportedly assured him of inclusion in the second list. However, his name was not found in that list either.
He alleged that Indiramma committee members were sidelining genuine applicants and allocating houses to their own people.
