Hyderabad: National and State bodies of the Indian Dental Association (IDA) have opposed the move by the Centre allowing Post Graduate Ayurveda students to take up certain dental procedures.
In a recent gazette notification, the Centre has said a PG scholar of Shalya and Shalakya, which are taught in Ayurveda stream, will receive practical training to independently perform Chaldanta-Danta Nirharan (tooth extraction) and Krumidanta-Lekhan and Puranshastrakarma (teeth root canal treatment), which fall under the broad category of DantaRog (dental diseases).
In a letter addressed to Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan, members of the IDA said: “The procedures to be conducted by an oral health professional, after having earned the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Master of Dental surgery, cannot be practised by other disciplines.” “Our profession is disappointed by the wordings in the Gazette. Oral health education and practice is a separate stream defined by the modern system of medicine requiring appropriate skill and learning,” said Dr A Srikanth, secretary, IDA, Deccan.
Demanding the immediate withdrawal of the notification, the IDA said mixing of systems would defeat the whole purpose of various curriculum, evidence generation, professional training, and exclusivity.
