Hyderabad: Telugu Titans, who are part of the Pro Kabaddi League since its inception, never managed to win a title. Despite having star players in their ranks, they failed to reach the summit clash in the history of the league. However, with the new season set to commence in a few days, the team from Hyderabad will begin their bid to capture the maiden trophy.
All eyes will be on the star raider Siddharth Desai, who will be the key to the team’s fortunes. The Titans’ management shelled out a whopping Rs 1.30 crore for the raider in the auction. Siddharth was also part of the Titans in the previous season. “We are determined to win the title this time. The goal is to play well and give our best. We did a lot of homework and worked on our fitness and game. We are raring to go,” he said from Bengaluru, where the entire league will be played.
The 30-year-old talented star, known as Siddharth ‘Bahubali’ Desai, felt the hefty price tag doesn’t concern him or put him under any pressure. “There is no pressure on me. Whatever preparations we did in off season and two camps we had before coming here were very good. We are looking forward to playing our game and implementing what we practised. The team is well balanced. We had a problem last time in the beginning with our combination. But this time, we have a good team. With Surinder Singh, Sandeep Kandola and the experienced Rohit bhai in the side, we are very confident. The New Young Players (NYP) are also doing very well.”
Titans named Rohit Kumar, who led Bengaluru Bulls to the title in 2018, as their captain and Siddharth said Rohit’s presence will have a big impact on the team. “He won the title with Bulls when he was the captain. He is ‘captain cool’. He stays calm in every situation and his decision-making is precise. Now that he is with us, it will be a big boost,” he added.
Speaking on the impact of Covid-19 which forced the league to suspend its edition last year, Siddharth, the vice-captain of the team, revealed that they never took a break. “It was tough with no games or the league. I was back in my village but I focused on fitness. I worked out regularly and never compromised on my fitness. We are in good shape ahead of this league now,” he said.
