Hyderabad: Think of jalebi and the image of a little kid – sulking and “going away from home” – being tempted by Ramu Kaka with his favourite dessert pops up into the mind. The dreamy look on the kid’s face while thinking of the jalebis is just unforgettable. Crunchy, crispy, juicy – with the sugary syrup dripping all over your hand and the place… oh those jalebis are just so heavenly.

If we have tempted you enough to lay your hand on the sweet treat, then this place in Secunderabad that we spotted can be the right eatery for you to head to! We Hyderabadis love our desserts and don’t mind travelling to different places to try something new.

Now, have you heard of Mahankali Jalebi Wala, who has been treating Hyderabadis to jalebis to for the past 38 years? The place has the best and yummiest freshly-made ghee jalebis.

Chattar Singh Rathore, who hails from Rajasthan, has opened his sweetmeat shop in the city close to four decades ago. Started with two workers, the ever-growing demand from his loyal clientele who keep returning to enjoy his dessert, has prompted Chattar Singh to employ five more people.

The shop was first opened near the High Court and was later shifted to Secunderabad. Chattar Singh didn’t have to look back once he opened the shop near Mahankali Street. “We never expected the response to be so good. More than thousand people visit our shop. We specialise in jalebi, so people come from different places just to taste our jalebis. We have two varieties of the dessert – one is made with dalda and another one is made of pure ghee,” says Chattar.

The eatery is always busy with the public queuing outside to grab a bite or standing close by and eating the yummy sweet. They don’t serve any other dessert apart from jalebi. The crowd still throngs the venue which is open throughout the year except during the Mahakali Jatara, when all the shops nearby to the temple are closed.

Apart from jalebi, they have savouries like moong dal pakoda, kachori, and onion pakoda. “My brother Bhim Singh and I started this together. We open the shop at 8 am and close it around 10 pm; people keep coming back to us because we make the sweet in front of our customers; we don’t hesitate to take orders even if one wants just 100 gms. From 100 gms to countless kilos, we cater to all kinds of customers and their sweet tooth,” concludes Chattar.
