The brutal firing on tourists in Pahalgam, killing 26 Indians, was a heinous act, said CPI (M) Khammam district secretary Nunna Nageswara Rao.

He demanded that the Centre take strict action against anyone who killed innocent civilians in the guise of religious fanaticism.

It was regrettable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah said normal conditions have been established in Jammu and Kashmir after their government came to power without taking proper measures for the security of visiting tourists.

The incident happened due to the failure of the intelligence system, the Centre was inviting tourists before the situation in Kashmir improved. The Centre and Shah should take moral responsibility for the incident, he said.

Religious fanaticism increased after the Modi government came to power and Modi should tell the nation what steps were taken to stop religious terrorist organisations. All parties would cooperate in eliminating terrorists, but the Modi government should work with sincerity towards such incidents, Nageswara Rao noted.

Kothagudem Bar Association members held an emergency meeting and observed a two-minute silence paying tribute to the innocent tourists who lost their lives in the attack.

A large number of people took part in a candlelight rally organised by Veera Shivaji Sena Youth in the town.
