Dip in fuel prices too little, too late: Mallikarjun Kharge

Hyderabad: Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday slammed the Centre on reduction of fuel prices saying the marginal decrease would not serve any benefit to general public. The Centre earned Rs 1.92 lakh crore through fuel sales during August, September and October. The total value of fuel price reduction was Rs 31,790 crore, he said.

“Centre’s fuel price reduction is an eyewash. The announcement came too late and it was too little as lot of money was earned through fuel sales,” Mallikarjun Kharge said at a press conference here on Monday.

The BJP government slashed the fuel prices as the party had lost miserably in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra elections, he said. “After conducting a marathon meeting with party leaders, BJP government reduced the fuel prices. When BJP loses elections, prices are reduced and when they are back in power, they hike prices,” charged Kharge.

Coming down heavily on the BJP government, the Congress leader alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “destroyed” India’s economy through demonetisation. “It has been five years since Modi ji announced demonetisation on November 8, 2016. Ever since, small businesses have been hit and closed. He (Modi) spoiled the country’s good economy through demonetisation,” Kharge said.

The Prime Minister’s move to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes did not serve its objectives, including the much-claimed curbing black money flow, he said. “The end result is many people lost their jobs due to demonetisation. This is a ‘black day’ for people of the country,” the former Union Minister said.

Regarding former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai, who recently tendered an apology to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, he said it vindicated the Congress’ stand that the entire 2G spectrum case was a massive “conspiracy” backed by the BJP-RSS workforce. It was aimed at destabilising the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, he added.
