Siddipet: Finance Minister T Harish Rao on Saturday released Godavari water into Kudavelly Vagu from Kondapochamma Canal of Mallanna Sagar project, which was built as part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) at Tukkapur in Thoguta mandal. Earlier, Harish Rao also released Godavari water from Mallanna Sagar to Gandi Cheruvu located in Yadadri Bhongir district. The project was taken up as part of the 15th package of KLIS.
Later, MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy released Godavari water from Sangareddy head regulator of Kondapochamma Sagar into Haldi Vagu.
Addressing the gathering after releasing the water from the Canal at Kodakandla village on Saturday, the Finance Minister said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had brought Godavari water for irrigation purposes even during the mid-summer to Siddipet land where fetching a pot of water during the summer was a dream.
“Gone are the days when the crops used to wither out and borewells used to go dry. Now the canals and streams are brimming with Godavari water and the agriculture fields are looking like green landscapes in these parts of Telangana,” Rao said. He added that the Chief Minister had made it possible to cultivate two crops by bringing the Godavari water to Siddipet. Saying that there was no need to look at the sky for rains now, the Minister said a small request to Chief Minister was enough to irrigate their fields with Godavari water. While the Kudavelly Vagu has 39 check dams and the Haldi Vagu has 32 check dams, he said the check dams will be brimming with water in a while. However, he lashed out at Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party for turning a blind eye towards the change Telangana State witnessed during the past few years under the rule of Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
After flowing through the five tanks, the water released from the Sangareddy head regulator flows into Haldi Vagu at Khan Cheruvu, where the Haldi Vagu originates. It confluences with River Manjeera at Edupyala temple after travelling 70 km in Siddipet and Medak districts. The water will reach Nizam Sagar, built across Manjeera, in the borders of Medak-Kamareddy district after travelling another 20 km.
As the groundwater was depleting and the harvesting period of various Yasangi crops was 30 to 60 days away, Harish Rao said the release of Godavari water into these two streams will help the farmers save their crops amid summer.
MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, ZP Chairman Roja Sharma, Engineer–Chief Hariram, MLCs Dr V Yadava Reddy, Ragotham Reddy, Forest Development Corporation Chairman Vanteru Prathap Reddy, DCCB Chairman Chitti Devendar Reddy, and others were present.
