Medak: Dubbak MLA Kotha Prabhakar Reddy has urged the Congress government to expedite the completion of the pending Irkode lift irrigation project and associated distributory canals to ensure irrigation water reaches the ayacut in his constituency.

Addressing the Jala Sadhana Samithi, an organisation formed by farmers of Dubbak constituency, in Dubbak on Wednesday, Prabhakar Reddy said that 12 villages, which lost land under the Mallanna Sagar project, would benefit once the irrigation works are completed.

He warned that unless the government completes the pending canal works, efforts would be made to prevent the diversion of Godavari water from Mallanna Sagar to other parts of the State.

The BRS MLA stated that the previous government had spent Rs 111 crore out of the total Rs 131 crore required for the project. However, he criticised the Congress government for failing to release the remaining Rs 20 crore over the past one-and-a-half years, thereby depriving farmers in Dubbak of access to Godavari water.

He asserted that the agitation would continue until the pending canal works in Dubbak are completed.

Farmers from several villages, including Pedda Gundavelli, Gudikandula, Venkatapur, Bussapur, Varadarajula Pally, Goverdhanagiri, Andhe, Kondapur, Padmanabunipalle, Timmapur, Marrikunta and Ghanpur, participated in the protest.
