Two minor sisters drown in Saryu river in Gonda

Two minor sisters, aged 15 and 9, drowned in the Saryu river in Gonda after slipping from a wall near a ghat while feeding fish. Locals and divers rescued them, but doctors declared both dead at a community health centre

Gonda (UP): Two minor sisters drowned in the Saryu river here on Sunday after they slipped from a wall near the steps of a river ghat, police said. The incident occurred around 10.30 am near the Ram Janki temple in Bhauriganj, where the sisters had gone to feed fish, Circle Officer (Colonelganj) Anand Kumar Rai said.

The victims were identified as Supriya Tiwari, 15, and Suhani Tiwari, 9, daughters of Arun Kumar Tiwari and residents of Rajapur village under the Parsapur police station area, he said. According to Rai, the two sisters slipped from a wall near the steps of the ghat and fell into the river.

Hearing their cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot and alerted police. With the help of local residents and divers, the girls were pulled out of the river and taken by ambulance to the Parsapur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead.

Senior administrative and police officials also reached the spot after being informed about the incident. Parsapur Station House Officer Kamal Shankar Chaturvedi said the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. Revenue Inspector Amarjeet Singh and lekhpal Vasudev Yadav said a report on the incident had been prepared and sent to the district disaster department for assistance under provisions relating to natural calamities.
