Election Commission increases upper limit of poll expenses

Hyderabad: Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana Shashank Goel has announced that the Election Commission of India has enhanced the upper limit of expenses applicable to candidates at elections to Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies by amending Rule 90 of Election Rules of 1961. The increase applies to the by-elections in Dubbak slated for November 3.
As per the ECI notification the increase applies to 28 States including Telangana and 8 Union Territories. For Telangana Rs 77, 00,000 will be the upper limit for Parliamentary Constituency and Rs 30, 80,000 will be the upper limit for Assembly Constituencies. ECI Secretary NC Bhutia in a letter to all CEOs has said that the amendment was in accordance with a notification dated October 19, 2020 from the Ministry of Law and Justice.
While the increased upper limit was the same for all States it is only Rs 59, 40,000 for Parliamentary segment and Rs 22, 00,000 for Assembly in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, and Sikkim States, and all Union Territories except Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. While the upper limit for Loksabha constituency in Delhi is Rs 77, 00,000 and Rs 30, 80,000 for Assembly, it will be Rs 70, 00,000 for Loksabha and Rs 30, 80, 00 for Assembly in J&K.
