Hyderabad: An eminent scholar and literateur M Sivaramakrishna passed away here on Tuesday. He was 87 and is survived by two sons, daughter and grandchildren.
Prof Sivaramakrishna, fondly called as MSR by his students, taught English Literature at the University College of Arts and Social Sciences, Osmania University for a long time. He was ailing for the last two years and had passed away in the presence of his close family members. The funeral will be held at Amberpet crematorium on Wednesday afternoon.
Known for his excellent teaching skills and his writings, Prof Sivaramakrishna was a teacher par excellence. He authored more than 50 books on literature and vedanta. He was an ardent disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and spent his entire time after retirement in service of Ramakrishna Mutt.
Prof Sivaramakrishna’s teaching of Shakespeare is remembered by his students even now and he was one among the outstanding English literature teachers of Osmania University like Prof Isaac Sequeira, Prof Vasanth Shahane, Prof Adapa Ramakrishna Rao, Prof Satyanarayan Singh and Prof K Venkatachary.
He made immense contribtion to the development of critical studies on Indian writing in Engish. His insight into Indian poetry in English earned him international reputation. He played crucial role in developing the English proficiency programmes at Vivekananda’s School of Languages at Ramakrishna Mutt in Hyderabad.
