Hyderabad: There was a time when people living on the outskirts of the capital city fought with civic authorities and struggled to ensure drinking water for their homes on a daily basis. Things have changed for the better, and are all set to get even better with the State government developing infrastructure to boost drinking water supply in municipal corporations and municipalities around the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation jurisdiction.
As part of this exercise, in Medchal constituency alone, works are under way to provide 50,219 new drinking water connections. These works are being executed under the Outer Ring Road Phase-II project in Medchal Constituency at an estimated cost of Rs 240.11 crore by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board. The Board will charge only Re.1 per new connection and works are underway at a brisk pace, officials said. “Though the deadline to complete the works in Medchal is 2024, we are trying to complete it by mid-2023,” said P Ravi Kumar, Director (Technical), HMWS&SB.

Under this project, taken up to provide over 50,000 new water connections in the Medchal assembly segment, a total of 23 reservoirs are being built. Out of these, construction of eight reservoirs in Ghatkesar, five in Keesara, eight in Shamirpet, and two in Medchal mandals is in progress. In addition to this, 597 km of pipelines will be laid.
Over three lakh people living in the constituency will be benefited once the project is completed said, HMWS&SB officials. The foundation stone for the project was recently laid by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao.
To boost the drinking water supply in urban local bodies located around GHMC, the Outer Ring Road Phase-II project is being executed at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. Upon completion of the project, around 20 lakh people living in these areas will be supplied potable drinking water on par with those staying in the city. The works underway in Medchal are part of the same project.
