Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old engineering student allegedly attempted suicide by self-immolation on the Osmania University campus creating panic on Monday.

According to information available, the student, identified as Vinesh, a mining engineering student, poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire near the Renuka Yellamma temple within the university campus.

Locals immediately alerted the OU police, who rushed to the spot and shifted him to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.

Doctors said Vinesh has suffered over 70 per cent burn injuries, with severe burns on his face, and his condition remains critical. He is currently undergoing treatment in the emergency ward.

Police suspect that a personal relationship issue may have driven the extreme step. A purported suicide note recovered from the student reportedly mentions emotional distress over a failed love affair.

He allegedly wrote that the girl he loved had betrayed him and was involved with someone else. The note ends with an apology to his parents and others.

Vinesh is said to be a native of Govindapur in Mahabubabad district.

The OU Police are investigating.
