Hyderabad: A two-judge panel of the Telangana High Court, comprising A Rajasheker Reddy and Justice T Vinod Kumar, on Wednesday directed the Nirmal District Collector to ensure that no encroachment is done in FTL and buffer zones.
In a PIL filed by K Anju Kumar Reddy, it was raised that the tank bed lands were being destroyed due to the construction in and around the 500 lakes present in the Cheruvu Tank of Nirmal village. On a previous occasion, the Collector was summoned to appear before the court and provide a status on the issue. The panel opined that the mere presence of the Collector isn’t sufficient and some action is required. The Collector could not place on record the entire action taken, especially with respect to extinct and existing lakes.
It directed the Irrigation and Command Area Development to keep the lands under the prohibited list and as soon as the weather conditions get better, build fencing by evacuating locals, within law and order. It also directed the Collector to give a detailed list of the lands falling under the FTL/buffer zones to the Sub-Registrar to ensure that no construction permissions are given. The matter was adjourned to October 26.
Status of old-age homes
The panel directed the Women and Child Welfare Department to file a detailed status report on the basic amenities available in old-age homes in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy District. In a letter taken up suo moto as a PIL, it was observed that some of the old-age homes in the State are in an extremely poor condition where the inmates are being treated inhumanly by chaining them. It was also noted that the ratio of the number of inmates to that of the beds is also at an extremely high rate. Vasudha Nagaraj has been appointed as an amicus curiae and directed to give her suggestions pertaining to the issues.
