Hyderabad: On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Hyderabad to participate in an event ICRISAT and also launch the Statue of Equality, the social network has been abuzz with #EqualityForTelangana after a bunch of youngsters held a flexi seeking Government of India’s support to various projects in Telangana.

As the Prime Minister landed in the city, a group of youngsters staged silent demonstration at Tank Bund holding a flexi emblazoned with ‘What about equality for Telangana?’

The flexi reads: “Where is the rail coach factory in Telangana? Where is ITIR for Telangana? Where is the Turmeric Board for Telangana? Where is the national status for the irrigation project for Telangana? Where is the Bayyaram steel factory for Telangana? Where are medical colleges for Telangana? etc listing the lack of Centre’s support to these projects.

Minutes after the youngsters started their demonstration, the social media was abuzz with the tag #EqualityforTelangana trending with over 10,000 posts and asking the Prime Minister why Telangana continues to get coldshoulder from the Government of India. A video of the demonstration on Tank Bund posted on Twitter garnered over 8,000 views within an hour.

The recent Budget has no specific allocations for Telangana even though Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao and other Cabinet colleagues made fervent appeals to support progressive States such as Telangana. It had no provision to address the promises made under Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and completely ignored the requests from Telangana government. Further, the State government made requests pertaining to nearly 35 issues, which were all turned down.

Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao said, “Sir, What does the union Govt do with all the letters and representations given by Telangana Ministers? Very curious to know. There is no reply to our requests, at least answer this sir.”

A tweet from Krishank Manne, chairman of Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation, said “Welcome Hon’ble Prime Minister ji, With due respect, we appeal to you to treat Telangana State equally like Gujarat. It’s 8 years , 8 Budgets and still our Telangana is deprived of Justice from union Government of India.”

“ITIR would have given these youngsters lakhs of jobs. Pl tell PM sir, where is #EqualityForTelangana,” said his another tweet.

“#Telangana has been requesting National Project Status for #KaleshwarmProject since 7 yrs but u gave it to Upper Bhadra Project of Karnataka,” said a tweet by @dcstunner999. “Modi ji instead of just dedicating Statue of Sri Ramanujacharya please respect his Spirit of Equality,” the tweet said.

“Dear Prime Minister, Telangana as a progressive state has come a long way after the state formation. But unfortunately, we received no support from the Center. Why this partiality sir? Where is #EqualityForTelangana ?,” said MLC Dr Palla Rajeshwar Reddy.
