Hyderabad: The year 2022 is looking promising for traffic and pedestrians in Hyderabad. Smooth flow of traffic and better pedestrian facilities are on the cards with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) taking up the development of 25 junctions in different parts of the city.
Kamineni Hospital Junction in LB Nagar, Abids, Chilkalguda, Miyapur Police Station Road and NFCL in Punjagutta are some of the 25 locations where these facilities are being developed.
As per GHMC records, out of the 90 junction improvement works sanctioned, 65 have been completed, 11 are under progress and the remaining 14 are yet to be started.
One each in Charminar, LB Nagar, Serilingampally and Kukatpally zone, two in Secunderabad and five in Khairatabad zone are the places where the development of 11 junctions is underway at a brisk pace.
Most of the junctions proposed and developed are located in the GHMC Khairatabad Zone. Out of the 34 junction improvement works in this zone, 22 have been completed.
While the junctions at IKEA, Road Number 45-Jubilee Hills, Puranapul and Karmanghat have been completed, the works at the junctions located at Madhapur Police Station, Rethibowli, Uppal and Lakdikapul are yet to commence.
According to the GHMC records, the major works taken up under the junction improvement programme include the development of central medians, dividers and free lefts. At feasible locations, a traffic island, pedestrian refuge island or roundabout is being developed. To further deck up these facilities, greenery is developed and sculptures are installed inside these islands. Meanwhile, pavements are built, zebra crossings are marked and signage is installed for pedestrians, as part of junction improvement works that improve the commuting experience and enhance the safety of pedestrians.
According to GHMC engineers, the junction improvement works have increased traffic discipline. “At places where junctions are developed, commuters are taking a U-turn only at designated places. As footpath works are also being developed, scores of pedestrians are also being benefited,” an official said.
