Fact Check: Viral pic of Manali crowds found to be old
Alt News, a fact checking website, found a Facebook post-dated January 24 of this year, where it is captioned as Manali’s Mall Road and attributed to ‘Amigosblink’.
The recent pictures of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where a huge crowd was seen holidaying, but without adhering to the Covid-19 precautions, had gone viral.
One such image showing a large crowd at a marketplace in Manali was falsely circulated on various platforms as recent as the picture is said to actually be from December 2020.
Alt News, a fact checking website, found a Facebook post-dated January 24 of this year, where it is captioned as Manali’s Mall Road and attributed to ‘Amigosblink’.
The website then found Amingosblink’s January 23, 2021 post containing the image using a keyword search on Facebook. When Alt News contacted the Facebook page for more information about the picture, Ajay Kumar, the administrator running this page, stated that he had taken the snapshot on December 31, 2020. He has also shared a Facebook Live from the same day.
The Facebook page also shared a post about the same and clarified that it is not from recent times.
However, it is noticed that Covid pandemic was still persistent in December and many tourists in the hill town were seen not wearing face covers as a precaution against Covid-19.
