Family of Hyderabad native attacked in US appeals for emergency visas

The family of Hyderabad resident Syed Sohail Uddin, who was seriously injured in an alleged hate crime in Utah, has appealed to the Government of India and the US Consulate General for diplomatic intervention, emergency visas and the best possible medical treatment.

HYDERABAD: The family of Syed Sohail Uddin, who was attacked in an alleged hate crime on July 14 by Peter Michael Larsen, a US national, has urged the Government of India to take up the matter with the authorities in the United States and ensure that he receives the best possible medical care.

Syed Sohail, a resident of Tolichowki in Hyderabad, was working at a kiosk inside Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Salt Lake County, Utah, when Peter Michael Larsen allegedly attacked him on July 14. He lives there with his wife, Amreen Firdous, and their two children, aged five and three.

“We came to know about the attack on Syed Sohail on Tuesday night (India time). Initially, we were told that he had suffered a minor injury. An hour later, we saw videos on social media showing a well-built man repeatedly attacking Syed Sohail with a large dagger. He was stabbed 16 times and suffered life-threatening injuries,” said Asma Firdous, Syed Sohail’s sister-in-law.

The family appealed to the Government of India and the United States Consulate in Hyderabad to immediately grant emergency visas to family members so they can travel to the United States and be by the side of their injured relative.

“My sister, Amreen Firdous, is in a state of shock. She fainted after learning that her husband had been attacked. There is no one to take care of the children, as my sister is at the hospital with her husband,” Asma Firdous said.
